Wen Xiangcheng: Sanchuan Huala

The World Oral Literature Project is pleased to host the video recordings collected by Wen Xiangcheng from 2008 to 2010. Details of the full collection can be browsed on DSpace@Cambridge by clicking here.

This collection contains audio interviews from the Sanchuan region, in the south of Minhe Hui and Tu Autonomous County, Haidong Region, Qinghai Province China. All interviews are with huala, male villagers who regularly incarnate local tutelary deities, on such occasions as healing rituals, and the annual harvest festival. The huala interviewed here are mostly Mangghuer; the collection contains one interview with a Tibetan huala, called lha pa in the local Tibetan dialect.

1. Baojia Huala
The huala describes how he became a huala and also discusses his experiences of being a huala. He discusses the specific role of the huala in his village, and discusses previous huala in the village.

2. Chuankor Huala
The Chuankor huala describes how he became a huala and narrates some of his experiences after he became a huala. He described how he performs at funerals and healing rituals while possessed. He also discussed other huala in his local area.

3. Doujia Huala
In this interview the huala explained how he became a huala and how he treated illnesses. He also suggested that though his ancestors were not real huala, they used to treat sicknesses with yinyang (Daoist practitioners).

4. Mangghuer Guojia Huala
The huala described how he became a huala and his experiences of performing while possessed on various ritual occasions. He also described from which local communities huala come. He disclosed that Salar and Hui people also invited him to treat sicknesses that cannot be cured with medical treatment.
法拉叙述了他怎样成为法拉和他在节日期间跳舞的经验。他指出有几个村拥有一个纳顿节和在那些村里的每一个人都有可能成为法拉。他透露撒拉和回族也邀请过他们治疗用药物不能治疗的疾病。

5. Keshimon Huala
The huala said that he became a huala when he went to a sick person’s home to watch a healing ritual, and he was suddenly possessed during the ritual. He also described his experience of being possessed.
法拉说他到了一个得病的家里后突然在众人前跳起了舞以后就成了法拉。 他提及了神附体后的经历。

6. Minsougou Huala
The huala described his experience of being a huala. He also talked about the local temple and its history. The huala stated that he used to dance on Nadun day after becoming a huala, but he stopped dancing during Nadun about ten years ago.
在这段采访中他们谈到了很多跟法拉和当地神庙有关联的事情。法拉指出以前他成了法拉后在纳顿节上跳舞,但是他已经大约在十年前停止了在纳顿节上跳舞。

7. Nongchang Huala
In this interview the huala talked about when he became a huala and his feelings about being possessed. He also discussed several classes of deities. The huala also discussed his opinions about hualas of the past and present. He also stated his negative feelings about being a huala.

8. Pubaghuer Erlang Ye Huala
The huala mentioned that his ancestors were not huala but the deity chose him as a huala. He also stated that he never had any formal initiation ceremony.
这位老人提到了他的祖先们不是法拉, 由神他们自己选择法拉。他是被二郎爷挑选,在他成为法拉的时候没有正规的仪式。

9. Pubaghuer Huala
The interviewer asked the huala why Mangghuer people dance the Nadun festival. The huala mentioned where his ancestors were from and stated that his family had huala roots. He then described how he became a huala and his experiences of being possessed. The huala also discussed where and what kind of sicknesses he had treated.

10. Taikeng Huala
The huala stated that three years prior to the interview he had become a huala. He also described how on the previous year's Nadun day, he was undertaking migrant labour elsewhere but had been possessed nonetheless. He described the feeling of being possessed by the deity.
法拉指出从三年前开始他成为了法拉,他去年到其他的地方打工,在纳顿节那天他开始颤抖而不能自控。他讲述了他被神附体时的感觉。

11. Dazhuang Lhapa
The Dazhuang lha pa described when he became a lha pa. He listed on what kind of occasions he was possessed and what kinds of problems he helped villagers to solve.

12. Mangla Huala
The huala explained that he got a terrible sickness before he became a huala. He treated that sickness by himself while possessed by the deity. In the past he went to treat different sicknesses but he has now stopped because he is too old and the process of healing is too tiring. There is currently no huala to replace him, because young people are unwilling to become huala.
法拉告诉采访者在他成为法拉以前他得了一个很严重的疾病,并且神上了身以后由他自己治疗了那个疾病。他治疗过各种各样的疾病,而现在由卦代替停止了去治疗疾病,他就告诉人们所在的问题是什么。目前因为年轻的一代不愿当法拉,所以也没有新的法拉。
